Title: Business Development Manager
CLIENT:
Our client is a leading company in Engineering Plastics and a subsidiary of a multibillion dollar European parent, a fully integrated chemical manufacturer of industrial, and fine chemicals, as well as base resins. The Engineering Plastics business group has a significant presence in Europe and Asia. The client is an ISO and QS certified compounder of engineering plastics. The company starts with basic resins and through the addition of additives, modifiers, and colorants, changes the physical and/or cosmetics properties of the materials to meet customer specifications. The main facility is a union shop (UAW) of approximately 125,000 square feet situated on 22 acres with 240 employees.
POSITION:
The Business Development Manager will report to the Market Manager. He/She will assist business management in the development of business marketing plans. This results oriented professional will interact with sales, operations, procurement, logistics, customer service, quality and product development. This proactive leader will support problem generate new business through management of selected product, application, segment and/or market development activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Identify business opportunities in existing or new markets and develop concepts to sell into these markets against maximum value
- Define and manage projects for implementation of the business plans within set targets. Drive the project forward, deal with commercial and technical issues and negotiate price and terms in order to achieve commercialization
- Bridge the roles of Account Managers (expected to be good at consultative selling, closing deals and the whole sales process) and Applications Development Engineers responsible for technical capability and know-how.
- Assume responsibity for new applications and new customers (Account Managers will handle existing applications and customers).
- Shift gears from the technical side to the commercial issues as necessary. His/her proactive, can-do attitude will motivate others.
- He/She will understand the value proposition for each customer. (There are those that find value from the integration of parts, others that see value in getting costs down, others that find value in lighter weight parts, etc.).
- Develop marketing tools that address each customers needs in order to demonstrate an understanding of each customer’s value proposition.
- Evaluate feasibility of each value proposition to determine whether to invest additional time, money and energy or move to the next project. He/She will make these hard decisions based on risk vs. reward criteria.
- Manage transfer of new business to commercial business. Work through the technical hurdles e.g. product validation, design validation, system validation and then move on to address commercial issues around price, terms, etc.
- Manage budget, to ensure tech support and product resources are wisely distributed in order to realize best ROI
- Determine when to assign an Account Manager based on potential in real commercial sales in the right industry space. The BDM will stay with a new project until it is sizeable enough to warrant an Account Manager.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Degree in Engineering or Science/Technology
- Six Sigma experience preferred
- Experience in commercial positions preferred
- Analytical skills with emphasis on statistical methods
- Candidates must be above average, highly adaptable and mobile
- Ability to think “outside the box”
- Excellent communication and relationship building skills
