Title: Director of Manufacturing Operations
CLIENT:
This SBU is a $40 million sales-driven instrumentation manufacturer.
Their systems, software and instruments are widely used in a variety of
industries. Between 1989 and 1990, the company was formed by the merger
of three companies. The purpose behind the merger of these enterprises
was to capitalize on their synergy and combined dominance of the marketplace.
Together, their presence accounted for approximately 80% of their industry.
Unfortunately, this effort failed due to lack of focus and leadership;
therefore, the synergy they had hoped to achieve eluded them.Six months
ago, a new President was appointed to initiate a major turnaround. Upon
determining that the financial performance of the company was unacceptable,
he initiated steps which resulted in the company breaking even this year.
He immediately set in motion the reengineering of the company changing
its structure from a functional to a Strategic Business Unit; published
Core Values; redirected the sales approach; and redefined the company's
focus.
POSITION:
The position reports to the SBU General Manager. The Director of Manufacturing
Operations will have responsibility for working with focus work teams overseeing
the entire manufacturing process from order entry through customer feedback
(order entry, purchasing, inventory, assembly, quality, customer feedback).
The new Manager will orchestrate and synchronize the activity of 4 focus
work teams, each comprised of a team leader, purchasing manager, inventory
manager and 3 to 5 assemblers. The teams are distinguished by product responsibilities.
These teams must work very closely with the customer in order to provide
innovation, cultivate relationships, and be free to meet the customer's
requirements. Further, the position will have responsibility for Q-1 (quality)
and will be addressing issues such as team personnel, team integration
and team proactivity. Supplemental responsibilities will include overseeing
facilities management and repair, as well as maintaining on-time shipping.
The ultimate goal is to create a customer responsive environment. The ideal
candidate will understand that speed and efficiency are fostered through
quality and knowing how to add value to the customer's process, and also,
the importance of promoting initiative through trust and fairness.
